Hierarchy mapping is a fancy way of saying "organizing the content relationship and flow of the site into a visually cohesive representation", or at least a shorter way of saying the same thing. This planning tool not only aids in the development of your site, but is a valuable aid to you, the client, in better understanding what your site will consist of and what its "basic" functions are.

Perhaps the most difficult task for any web site endeavor is the daunting task of gathering content.
